Blue Sky Information

Technology

Blue Sky Biotech, Inc. was founded in April 2003. Its principal laboratory operation is currently located in Worcester, MA, USA. Currently in its 7th year, The Company has experienced rapid growth, driven primarily by fee-for-service contract research (CRO) sales. Annual revenue for The Company has grown by >25% every year, and The Company achieved break-even sales against seed capital investment in its 11th month of operation.

The Company provides a complete bundle of “gene to screen” custom biological research reagents. The BioServices segment is Blue Sky’s primary source of revenue. Blue Sky has contracts with most major research-based drug discovery firms. In fact, The Company has built a client foundation comprised of all 10 of Fortune’s Top 10 Pharmaceutical Companies.

The Company is privately held by private (angel) investors and employees. The Executive Team at Blue Sky consists of Paul Wengender, CEO and Chairman, Norman Garceau, Ph.D., President and CSO, and The Management Team consists of Dr. Scott Gridley, Dr. Rajiv Gangurde, Dr. Brian Cain, Doug Demian, and William Hermans. Blue Sky’s expert laboratory staff of over 30 FTEs collectively leverages over 200 years of research-based drug discovery experience.

The Company’s vision is to increase the speed-to-market from “idea” to “drug”. Within the scope of this vision and in addition to research services, The Company is rapidly developing its own products (BioProducts) and technologies. The Company is actively seeking partners that share this vision. Blue Sky is focused on the delivery of time as it relates to molecular biology, tissue culture, fermentation, protein, antibody, and cell biology research services (BioServices). Accordingly, Blue Sky engages a significant portion of its resources toward the development of technology platforms that will shorten the “gene to screen” operational cycle time. Examples of BioServices technology platforms intrinsically developed at Blue Sky are:

  • Chain Blue Lightning™ Gene Synthesis: Semi-automated in vitro gene synthesis
  • TeraPrep™ Bulk Plasmid production (10–500 mg) with high resolution, fast cycle purification
  • Infection Kinetics Monitoring®, which dramatically improves the traditional baculoviral expression cycle times and enhances expression reproducibility
  • RedSee™ protein tracking technology promises to accelerate processing time and increase efficiencies in bacterial recombinant protein expression and downstream processing
  • Puritin™ eukaryotic tandem fusion protein tag system

Principal drivers for The Company’s growth over the next 5 years will be:

  • Significant reinvestment of earnings and outside investment into intellectual and capital assets
  • BioServices growth by continual improvement of existing service platforms and investing in novel value-added service platforms
  • BioProducts growth through focused investment and resource allocation and alliance building
