MEK kinase (or MAP3K) is a serine/threonine kinase with a very important role in a network of phosphorylating enzymes integrating cellular responses to a number of mitogenic and metabolic stimuli, including insulin and many growth factors. MEK1 activates the ERK and JNK kinase pathways by phosphorylation of MAP2K1 and MAP2K4. MEK also activates CHUK and IKBKB, the central protein kinases of the NF-kappa-B pathway.
